Le buone “azioni” di Mr Banca: Disney

Caro amico di Mr Banca, sapresti dirmi quale posto occupa nell’immaginario collettivo Walt Disney?
Secondo te potremmo ridurre il 13° brand mondiale di un valore pari a quasi 39 miliardi di dollari (secondo la “Best Global Brands 2016 Rankings” redatta da Interbrands) ai soli personaggi come Topolino o Paperino? Non dovremmo allargare il discorso anche agli studi cinematografici posseduti da questa compagnia globale o ad uno dei 43 parchi Disneyland sparsi per il mondo? E non dovremmo anche includere una delle oltre 600 produzioni cinematografiche prodotte dal 1937 ad oggi, alcune delle quali successi su scala mondiale?

E’ proprio così, Walt Disney è tutto questo e molto altro ancora.

Da Cenerentola al capitano Jack Sparrow, il protagonista immaginario della saga cinematografica Pirati dei Caraibi. Dalle navi da crociera alle città futuristiche. Parliamo di una azienda che oggi dà lavoro a circa 195.000 impiegati in tutto il mondo.

Una azienda unica, ricca di successi e dalla dimensione planetaria

La Walt Disney Company, fondata da Walter Elias Disney il 16 ottobre 1923 e con sede a Burbank in California, è una società “icona” dell’intrattenimento capace di generare diverse decine di miliardi di dollari. Un marchio conosciuto in tutto il mondo e presente nella vita di ogni essere umano che è stato un bambino negli ultimi novant’anni. Si tratta di una azienda mondiale diversificata che si occupa di intrattenimento e di mezzi di comunicazione (media) suddivisa in quattro segmenti di business:

  • Media Networks – Comprende le reti televisive via cavo e broadcast, le produzioni e distribuzioni televisive, le stazioni televisive nazionali, i network radiofonici e le singole stazioni radio.
  • Parchi & Resorts – Possiede e gestisce, tra l’altro, il Walt Disney World Resort in Florida; Il Disneyland Resort in California; Aulani, Disney Resort & Spa nelle Hawaii; Il Disney Vacation Club; La Disney Cruise Line; e Le avventure di Disney. Questo segmento nel 2017 è letteralmente esploso grazie all’apertura dello Shanghai Disney Resort e ai migliori risultati ottenuti con Disneyland Paris e Hong Kong Disneyland.
  • Studio Entertainment – Questo segmento produce e acquisisce immagini in diretta (film classici) e animate (film di animazione), contenuti direct-to-video, registrazioni musicali e spettacoli dal vivo. La distribuzione dei film avviene sotto i principali e arci-noti brand quali Walt Disney Pictures, Pixar, Marvel, Lucasfilm e Touchstone.
  • Consumer product & interactive Media – Questo settore gestisce i brand commerciali, i personaggi e le proprietà visive e letterarie della società ai diversi produttori, sviluppatori di giochi e/o merchandising di ogni tipo, editori e rivenditori in tutto il mondo. E’ il segmento che si preoccupa anche di sviluppare e pubblicare giochi, soprattutto per piattaforme mobili e libri, riviste e fumetti. Questo segmento distribuisce e vende anche prodotti di marca realizzati dalla casa madre attraverso attività commerciali al dettaglio, online e all’ingrosso. Inoltre, le attività del segmento includono anche la gestione e la progettazione di siti web, principalmente per altre attività aziendali e lo sviluppo e la distribuzione di contenuti video online.

La Walt Disney Company ha prodotto ricavi per circa 14.784 milioni di dollari americani solo nel primo quarter del 2017, suddivisi in 6.233 milioni nel segmento “Media networks”, 4.555 milioni nel segmento “Parchi e Resorts”, 2.520 milioni in “Studio Entertainment” e 1.476 milioni nell’ultimo segmento “Consumer product & interactive Media”.

I ricavi totali sono stati di circa il 3% inferiori di quelli prodotti nello stesso periodo del 2016 (anno record con 55,63 miliardi di dollari di ricavi), che confermano l’andamento costante del business di Topolino & Co. e che porteranno l’azienda, anche nel 2017, a superare l’incredibile risultato di generare oltre 50 miliardi di dollari di ricavi!

Una cifra equivalente a più di quattro volte le entrate della sola Warner Bros oppure pari a quelle di quest’ultima sommate ai ricavi di due altre importantissime case cinematografiche statunitensi come la 21st Century Fox e la Viacom.

L’andamento del titolo Disney degli ultimi 5 anni

Il valore dell’azione della Walt Disney Company è cresciuto costantemente negli ultimi 5 anni fino ad arrivare alla ultima quotazione del 10 luglio 2017 pari a 103,59 $. Qualche mese fa si è anche vociferato del possibile acquisto del colosso Netflix da parte di Walt Disney e questo “rumor” ha dato vitalità al valore dell’azione che ha visto importanti compravendite.

Disney, sinonimo di longevità e lavoro

Come esseri umani abbiamo una memoria relativamente breve. Per questo motivo è estremamente raro che un brand rimanga rilevante in tutto il mondo costantemente per molti decenni. Walt Disney è riuscito a compiere un vero e proprio miracolo di “marketing” perché oltre a mantenere il proprio brand vivo nell’immaginario collettivo per quasi un secolo di vita è riuscito anche nell’intento di vederne crescere costantemente il proprio valore. Mickey Mouse, il personaggio più famoso creato da Walt Disney, tuttora attualissimo tra i bambini di tutte le età, è stato creato oltre 85 anni fa rivelandosi un testimone della incredibile longevità di questa società.

La dimensione della Walt Disney Company si riflette anche nel suo numero di dipendenti. Warner Bros oggi fornisce lavoro a circa 8.000 dipendenti. Viacom impiega poco più di 10.500 persone. 21st Century Fox paga lo stipendio a circa 20.500 persone. Il gigante di Internet, Google, conta circa 58.000 persone che lavorano per l’azienda.

E Disney? Come già anticipato all’inizio, Disney impiega circa 195.000 dipendenti (o cast members come li ama chiamarli) che corrisponde a più di due volte il numero totale dei dipendenti di tutte le aziende precedentemente nominate. E questo perché sotto il brand Disney sono raggruppate alcune delle più grandi firme del mondo dello spettacolo come ESPN, Marvel Comics, Hulu, Pixar, ABC Network e The History Channel.

E cosa possiamo dire di Disneyland?

Si narra che tutto nacque un giorno in cui Walt Disney, il fondatore, si trovava all’interno di un parco di Los Angeles. Seduto su una panchina osservò che i genitori non avevano molto da fare mentre osservavano i bambini che si divertivano ad effettuare vari giri sulle giostre pubbliche. Da ciò nacque l’idea di realizzare un parco a tema dove sia i bambini che i loro genitori possano divertirsi insieme e passare delle ore spensierate.

Oggi sia Disneyland che Disney World sono delle aree di divertimento della dimensione paragonabile a vere e proprie città. Infatti, Disney World è approssimativamente paragonabile alla stessa dimensione dell’intera San Francisco o a due volte quella dell’isola di Manhattan a New York.

Negli Stati Uniti, Disney World è il secondo acquirente più grande di esplosivi dopo l’esercito statunitense!

Se voleste soggiornare almeno un giorno in ognuna delle stanze a disposizione negli alberghi di Disney World non vi basterebbero 68 anni di vita!

Esistono parchi di divertimento Disneyland in America, Cina, Thailandia e Parigi… questo significa che il sole, letteralmente, non tramonta mai su Disneyland!

L’impatto creativo di Disney?

E’ il padre della tecnica di “doppiaggio” quando in un suo studio cinematografico fu possibile sincronizzare varie tracce di voci e di suoni in un film riproducendoli tutti insieme. Disney per primo ha dato voce ad un personaggio animato nel 1928. Infatti, Mickey Mouse è stato il primo personaggio animato che parlasse e le sue prime parole sono state: “Hot dog”.

I video a 360 gradi oggi molto utilizzati su Facebook sono un’altra invenzione degli studi Disney, nota con il nome di Circle Vision 360.

Volevo concludere l’articolo con la lunga lista che indica gli oltre 600 titoli distribuiti da Walt Disney nel corso degli anni, la data di uscita nelle sale cinematografiche statunitensi, il valore dei ricavi nel solo mercato USA (che in alcuni casi è più che decuplicato se considerato worldwide) e il medesimo valore attualizzato ad oggi considerando l’inflazione… in questo modo possiamo realmente quantificare la dimensione della più grande industria dell’intrattenimento di sempre.
